    Description

    This ruled surface has a wooden frame painted black. The frame has two horseshoe-shaped pieces on each of two opposite sides. These have holes which are strung to y-shaped pieces on the top and bottom. The lower surface has red threads, the upper one yellow threads. A pink yarn down the middle is tangent to both ruled surfaces.
    Some American geometric models copied those of European makers. This is one of them. The maker, Richard P. Baker of the University of Iowa, attached a paper label that reads: Scroll of higher order. The model closely resembles a smaller model sold by the German maker Ludwig Brill as a ruled surface with self-intersections forming a line, with four pinch points on the line.
