In 1918, dramatist and poet Percy MacKaye (1875– 1956) was asked by the Red Cross to write a short allegorical drama, or masque, entitled The Roll Call to support the effort of enrollment in the service. MacKaye wrote of the drama, “A growing, vital ideal of education in our new age urges the principle that all who seek to understand and grasp the essential of their environment . . . shall personally share and take some definite part in doing that which they aim to understand. That principle—participation—is the prime motive of community drama.” MacKaye’s daughter Arvia wrote in her memoir that her father had been “spellbound” by Isadora Duncan, who is often referred to as the “mother of modern dance.” Duncan, an advocate for women’s rights, was a supporter of the United States’ involvement in World War I. This chromolithographic poster features a photograph of her by Arnold Genthe, an admired photographer of celebrities and politicians.
