Caption
The student in this portrait wears a jacket with the word Moten emblazoned on the front for the school he likely attended, Lucy E. Moten Elementary in Anacostia, a neighborhood in southeast Washington, DC. Energetic marking from green wax crayons and blue felt tip markers add detail and texture to his clothing, while his skin tone is lightly shaded in brown crayon. The artist focused most of her time on rendering the sitter’s expression, which remains unreadable. The artist, Georgette Seabrooke Powell, sketched this image during her time as a guest educator at Moten Elementary School. Conducting art workshops at the school in collaboration with the Anacostia Museum inspired her sensitive portrayal of local residents and helped to train Anacostia’s next generation of artists.
