Summary
NASA presented this flag, mission patch, and certificate to the Museum as mementos of the historic first Space Shuttle mission, STS-1 in 1981. Commander John Young and Pilot Bob Crippen signed the presentation certificate. From the first mission to the last in 2011, NASA bestowed flags and patches flown aboard the Space Shuttle as tokens of appreciation to government agencies, officials, community organizations, corporations, schools, the spaceflight workforce, and other individuals. These items are often displayed as symbols of pride in the Space Shuttle program.
NASA transferred this plaque to the Museum in 1983.
