Object Details

Description

Jug with long cylindrical neck, pear-shaped body, disk base. Neck terminates in everted rim, with flanged rim vertically hatched. Handle, made separately, attached at rim, extends to maximum diameter of vessel. Upper part of handle terminates in upright floral form; floral decoration also fills area between handle and rim. Lower part of handle is in form of a palmette. At top and near bottom of handle are two plastic bumps that look like plastic, applied (i.e., nonfunctional) imitation of a pair of metal rivets.
The neck is plain. On the body of the vase is chased decoration arranged in three horizontal bands. From top to bottom: narrow band with leaf and tongue; wider band with continuous calyx pattern; tall zone from widest part of vase to just above base, with continuous lotus and palmette pattern.
Traces of gilding are preserved on the exterior, suggesting that the surface or details of the chased decoration were originally gilded.
