Caption
This round pinback button promoted the foundation behind the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The pin reads “The Names Project” in black and white against a lavender background. The word “Names” is featured as simulating being stitched to the background, and a hand sewing needle is drawn below the text. The memorial quilt was first conceived in 1985 during the early years of the AIDS pandemic and has since been displayed all around the United States.
The button is among more than 200 collected by longtime Anacostia resident and social justice advocate Howard Croft.
