    Artist

    Ira Blount

    Caption

The center of this colorful patchwork quilt is made of solid, calico, and striped African fabric pieced together in two-inch squares to form a large rectangular block. A solid blue cloth provides an inner border for this rectangle as well as an outer rectangular border. The area between borders is pieced with colorful two-inch squares. The quilting, which was done by hand, skillfully outlines subtle squares, diamonds, and stars.
After moving to Washington, DC following World War II, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
