    Description

To keep its troops marching, the Union bought millions of brogan-type leather shoes, such as this pair, from a legion of contractors utilizing new sewing and pegging machines. These shoes, issued to a U.S. Army engineer, served as models for those on a statue of General William T. Sherman near the White House in Washington, D.C.
