Summary

A bronze miniature coal burning train engine sits atop a three-tiered marble base. The engine, known as the General, was seized on April 12, 1862 by a group of twenty-two Union spies at Big Shanty, Georgia and chased to Chattanooga, Tennessee by Confederate soldiers and railroad men who eventually recaptured the train. The Union spies were led by J. J. Andrews, who proposed the plan to capture the train and drive it back to Chattanooga, burning bridges and cutting telegraph wires along the way. On the base are reliefs of canteens, bayonets, swords, hats, ammunition pouches, and flags. A brick walk encircles the monument and the graves of eight soldiers who were executed as Union spies.
