Description
A color photograph of the 1963 March on Washington by James P. Blair. The image depicts a front line of protesters leading a large group down the center of a street. Many people carry signs and placards.
The front line of the crowd is made up of both men and women, Black and white. At center, a man pushes another man in a wheelchair. The man in the wheelchair holds hands with the women at either side of him and the protesters along the rest of the line link arms. A woman just to the left of center carries a large sign reading [MASS. / ADA]. A woman to the right of center carries a sign reading [WE MARCH TOGETHER / CATHOLICS / JEWS / PROTESTANT / FOR DIGNITY / AND BROTHERHOOD / OF ALL MEN UNDER GOD / NOW!]. Other signs include messages such as “We Demand Equal Rights Now!” and “We Demand An End to Police Brutality Now!” A man wearing a clerical collar marches at the left end of the line.
The print is signed by the photographer at the lower left corner and labeled [1 of 9]. A caption by the photographer is printed along the bottom margin.
