    Description

Davis & Furber, a manufacturer of textile machinery for working wool, installed this bell at its factory in North Andover, Massachusetts, in the nineteenth century. Bells like this commonly tolled the hours of the day and alerted workers to their schedule at the factory.
The company began in 1832 as Sawyer, Phelps & Co. in Andover, Massachusetts, moved to North Andover in 1836 and manufactured machinery there until 1982. Various other partnerships preceded the formation of Davis & Furber, incorporated in 1883.
