Summary
Among the items issued to astronauts are Velcro-backed name tags that can be attached to their flight suits and jackets. This name tag is a spare for spaceflight participant Christa McAuliffe, who was selected to fly as the first teacher in space on the STS 51-L Shuttle mission in 1986. She and six crewmates died in the Challenger launch accident, never reaching space. NASA transferred a number of spare astronaut name tags to the Museum over the years.
Transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian Institution in 1997.
