Born New York City
Through her sprightly charm and comedic talent, Molly Picon expanded the audience for Yiddish Theater in the United States. She also paved the way for subsequent generations of Jewish performers. Women comedians, in particular, emulated her self-deprecating humor, physical antics, and engaging storytelling. In the early 1920s, Picon traveled to Europe to study Yiddish and gain acting experience. Following her triumphant New York City debut in 1923, she appeared in more than two hundred Yiddish productions. From 1933 to 1953, Picon hosted a radio program, and she later branched out into English-language theater and films. In 1971, she played the role of Yente the matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. Ten years later, she was elected to the American Theater Hall of Fame.
Ruth Light Braun made this portrait of “The Sweetheart of Second Avenue” as part of a series of drawings documenting Jewish life in New York City.
