Baker, Richard P.
Description
This geometric model was constructed by Richard P. Baker in the early twentieth century when he was Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Iowa. Baker believed that models were essential for the teaching of many parts of mathematics and physics, and over one hundred of his models are in the museum collections.
The circular wire structure and the line segments that cross it are painted gray. A typed paper tag reads: No. 228 (/) Stokes' Theorem: two coils (/) filled incorrectly to (/) Mobius. The figure is in the shape of a Mobius band.
According to Baker's 1931 catalog, this is a model for mathematical physics, specifically Stokes' theorem. It represents "Two coils filled incorrectly to a Mobius blatt."
The model was lent for exhibition at MIT in 1939. It came to the Smithsonian in 1956.
