Summary

This is a model of unknown scale of the Standard Missile (SM), a U.S. Navy ship-launched missile which has been produced in three major types, the SM-1, SM-2, and SM-3. The first two have solid-fuel motors and conventional warheads. The first SM-1 deployed in 1970 had a range of 19 miles and was primarily an anti-aircraft missile. An advanced SM-1 version entered service in 1981 and had a range of 35 miles. The first SM-2 was also deployed in 1981 and had a range of over 45 miles, but it could be used against aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and surface targets. The more advanced SM-3 is an anti-ballistic missile which employs a hit-to-kill vehicle.
The model's manufacturer is unknown. John and Cynthia Heyde donated it to the museum.
