Summary
This is a 1:40 scale model of the Jupiter missile, a U.S. Army surface-to-surface missile. Carrying one nuclear warhead and with a range of 1,500 miles, the Jupiter was to be deployed in allied nations close to the Soviet Union, but only 30 missiles were deployed in Italy in 1960 and 15 missiles in Turkey in 1962. Because of their vulnerability, and the fact that in the meantime the United States had deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles, the Jupiters were withdrawn from the two countries in 1963. The Army Ballistic Missile Agency made this model and donated it to NASM in 1961.
