Description
This geometric model was constructed by Richard P. Baker, while he was on the faculty of the University of Iowa. Baker believed that models were essential for the teaching of many parts of mathematics and physics, and over one hundred of his models are in the museum collections.
According to the label, this is a model of developable of normals along line of curvature of a scroll (a ruled surface). It has a square wooden base with two large corner extensions and metal screws. Strings join the extensions and the base. The label on base reads: No 144 (/) Developable of Normals (/) of a Scroll. The tags on models MA.211257.027 and MA.211257.028 both indicate that they are Baker's model 144. The models are not identical.
