Summary
This is the CTV-6 (Control Test Vehicle) version of the Gorgon 3A Navy missile developed for the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) in 1945. The CTV-6 version dates to 1947. The Gorgon 3A was rocket-powered and meant as an air-to-air missile to be carried by Navy long range patrol aircraft. The Reaction Motors, Inc. liquid propellant motor produced 350 pounds of thrust. It was downgraded and re-designated in September 1947 as the CTV-6. All together, 34 Gorgon 3As were built and test flown. The missile never became operational but helped provide experience in the design, development, and handling of these weapons.
The U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics transferred this Gorgon to the Museum in 1965.
