Born North Oxford, Massachusetts
Before founding the American Red Cross, Clara Barton worked as a clerk in this building, which was then the U.S. Patent Office. She was the first woman to receive the same federal salary as her male colleagues.
In April 1861, following an attack on Union troops in Baltimore during the Civil War, she volunteered to nurse the wounded at a makeshift hospital at the nearby U.S. Capitol. That experience inspired her campaign to secure and deliver medical supplies to the front lines, earning her reputation as the “Angel of the Battlefield.” At the war’s conclusion, Barton set up the Missing Soldier’s Office, located one block south of this building.
This engraved portrait of Barton was originally published in the book Woman’s Work in the Civil War (1867), along with an account of her wartime service. She established the Red Cross in 1881, leading the organization until her retirement in 1904.
