First published in 1963 and still in print today, Maurice Sendak’s picture book Where the Wild Things Are is a beloved modern classic. Raised in a household scarred by the loss of family members in the Holocaust, Sendak was a sickly boy who sought comfort in books and took pleasure in drawing from an early age. He worked as a children’s book illustrator throughout the 1950s, but his career as both author and illustrator did not begin in earnest until the publication of Where the Wild Things Are. Awarded the coveted Caldecott Medal for its superb illustrations, the book was highly original in combining elements of the grotesque with a largely upbeat story line. Sendak went on to produce other well-received children’s titles, including Higglety Pigglety Pop! Or There Must Be More to Life (1967) and In the Night Kitchen (1970). In this portrait, the author poses with his dog, Herman.
