    Description

Over the course of the twentieth century, new technologies gave American consumers more options in making payments, the most significant of which were charge and credit cards. General-purpose credit cards were first developed in the United States. Master Charge (now MasterCard) started in 1966 following BankAmericard (now Visa) and American Express which first became available to consumers in the late 1950s.
