Stripped of the five medals she won in track-and-field at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, Marion Jones insisted, “Your failure is not your future.” In 2007, she admitted to using steroids and pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators. She served a six-month prison sentence the following year. Now a personal trainer and coach, she hopes people recognize that “she went through some stuff. . . .But she didn’t stay there.”
Before competing in the Olympics, Jones was on the basketball court. In 1994, she helped the University of North Carolina win a national championship. Four years later, she was named MVP of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. She eventually returned to the sport, playing two seasons (2010–11) with the Tulsa Shock in the Women’s National Basketball Association.
ESPN commissioned this photograph by Rick Chapman to mark the tenth anniversary of the network's ESPY Awards.
