"Magdalene"

In this woodblock print, the biblical character, Mary Magdalene, crosses her arms and rests her head on her shoulder. Her downturned eyes and frown suggest melancholic contemplation. Her face, arms, and waist are black, while the background, chest, breasts, and hair are carved away, creating a textured white space. The demarcation between the figure and her environment are blended together, heightening the sense of moodiness in the image.

Despite enduring difficulties in his early years, David Bethuel Jamieson went on to study at the University of Vermont in Burlington in 1983, where his career in art began. In addition to focusing on art and American history, Jamieson participated in activist causes to advance diversity at his college and end apartheid in South Africa. David B. Jamieson died due to complications from AIDS in 1992.
