Summary
The survival machete provided to Apollo astronauts inside the survival kit rucksack #1 is a 17 inch long, all metal knife that has an aluminum handle and a high-quality stainless steel blade with a cutting edge on one side and a sawing edge on the opposite side. The machete sheath is fabricated from aluminum sheeting with the Teflon spacer (to protect the blade). The machete may be used for cutting or sawing if jungle-type terrain is encountered after an emergency landing.
The Apollo 13 survival kit, including this knife, was transferred by NASA in 1979.
