    Caption

The piecing on this quilt is a variation of a log-cabin pattern. Most of the piecing comprises two-inch squares sewn together to form long strips of a single pattern or color theme. Three edges of the quilt are made of long strips of cloth. The fabrics include solid colors (green, maroon, off-white, and turquoise) and over a dozen small floral calico-type prints. All four edges are hand-quilted in white thread with a rectangle enclosing an elongated “X.” The remainder is quilted just inside the seam of each two-inch square. This quilt is visually striking in its bold alternation of light and dark colored fabrics that creates a pattern similar to a Greek key.
In addition to quilting, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
