Living Aloha Festival 2014: Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu and Kūpaoa
Description
The Living Aloha Hawai'i Festival 2014 launches an anniversary year for the the museum, with a rich program of performances. This special Indian Summer Showcase features a hula presentation by San Francisco's Patrick Makuakane and Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu. Hula master Patrick Makuakane is well known for his innovative choreography. His work is grounded in the traditions of hula, yet he is has also developed a unique style, called hula mua, that uses modern music to provide a whole new dimension to the dance. Kūpaoa is an award-winning husband and wife musical duo. The lovely voices of Līhau Hannahs Paik and Kellen Paik have delighted listeners and audiences for almost a decade, starting out as musicians who shared stages with friends and each other, and then joining seven years ago as the duo Kupaoa, which has since become a solid institution in the field of Hawaiian music. Recorded on the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on May 17, 2014.
