The committee left inscribed upon their book of awards the following statement: "The committee on paintings recommend to the attention of the Board of Directors, the invention and painting exhibited by Capt. Hirshbull of Louisville, Ky., embracing a timepiece, musical box, railroad cars running, balloon ascending, windmill, &c., and a landscape painting invented and painted by the exhibitor, and they recommend it as worthy of a Grand Silver Medal."
