Bark Characteristics
Young bark is thin, red-brown and scaly. Mature bark is gray with shallow fissures.
Cone Characteristics
Seed and pollen cones are on seperate trees. Seed cones look like small berries which emerge green but darken to purple or brown with a waxy coating 18 months after pollination. Seed cones are .2-.36" across. Pollen cones are yellow and .12-.2" across.

Foliage Characteristics
Leaves are sharply pointed green needles which are up to 1" long, grow in whorls of 3, and have a white band on their upper surface. "Rigida," or rigid, refers to the needles.
