Acclaimed photographer Garry Winogrand captured this dual portrait of John F. Kennedy accepting the presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention. While Kennedy’s back is turned to the camera, his face appears as most people would have seen it—on the TV screen. Television played a key role in Kennedy’s campaign. On September 26, 1960, he faced Richard Nixon in the first nationally broadcast presidential debate. According to Nielsen Media Research, nearly 60 percent of all U.S. households watched the watershed event.
Winogrand included this image in his portfolio titled 15 Big Shots. Among the collection is another iconic image: Marilyn Monroe holding her skirt down over a breezy subway grate on the set of her movie The Seven Year Itch (1955).
