Andy Warhol created the Flash portfolio, originally titled Andy Warhol’s Tribute to John F. Kennedy, five years after the president’s assassination. The eleven screen prints chronicle the news coverage of the events of November 22, 1963—from the excitement of a presidential motorcade to shock and mourning. Each piece is distinct and can be displayed individually, together, or in groups.
This magenta portrait layers a recognizable, smiling Kennedy with pictures of the presidential seal. Kennedy’s image is slightly elongated, likely mirroring a vintage television screen. It may reflect Warhol’s interest in the relationship between reporters and political celebrities.
