The author, who is the daughter of African-American artist James A. Porter, describes through a series of letters, Porter's the acquaintance with artist Henry O. Tanner. Porter was influential in purchasing and providing exposure of Tanner's works during the 1930s through a series of exhibitions and inclusion in the collection of fine art at Howard University in Washington, DC. Tanner, an older artist, was based in Paris. He painted with a mixture of oil and tempera, and his later work was of a religious character.
