Born Galveston, Texas
For more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African American in sport. The first Black boxer to earn the heavyweight title, in 1908, Johnson was known for a style that combined power, patience, and counterpunches. His title victory made him a hero to many but sparked outrage among others who found it impossible to accept a Black man as champion.
On July 4, 1910, Johnson defeated James Jeffries in the “Fight of the Century,” which was watched by 22,000 spectators. The fifteenth-round knockout became a powder keg throughout the country, sparking riots in major cities and small towns. Estimates claim more than twenty-five people were killed and hundreds injured over the course of the week, making this the first nationwide race riot in the United States. As a result, Congress banned the interstate transportation of boxing films in 1912; it took twenty-eight years for the law to be repealed.
Today, Johnson is recognized as one of the greatest boxers in U.S. history.
