    Description

Iowa as it in in 1855; A Gazetteer for Citizens and a Handbook for Immigrants served as a comprehensive guide to the state of Iowa, featuring chapters on land quality, climate, population, infrastructure, government, and charitable organizations. Iowa’s settlement was part of a larger migration across the American West that began with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Part of the original Louisiana Purchase territory, Iowa, became a state in 1846. It attracted immigrants, and migrants were drawn to the region's fertile soil and climate suitable for farming.
