Description
Medal commemorating the Great International Exhibition for 1862 held in London. Obverse marked: "TO THE COMMEMORATION OF HIS LATE R.H. THE PRINCE CONSORT ALBERT;" depicting a profile portrait of the late Prince Albert; reverse marked: "INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION 1862 [/] STAMPED IN THE BUILDING [/] BY H. WHLHORN [/] OF GREVENBROICH [/] PRUSSIA;" depicting the exhibition building.
The International Exhibition for 1862 was a World's Fair held in South Kensington, London, UK. Hosting a little over six million visitors between the months of May and November, the Fair showcased the work of 28,000 international exhibitors.
Known commonly as the The London Exhibition, the event highlighted modern industrial technologies as well as cultural works such as fine art and music. Notable displays included demonstrations of railroad technology, the electric telegraph and the first artificial plastic.
