The painting shows an industrial scene on the banks of the Harlem River in New York City. The Harlem River is a navigable tidal body of water that connects the Hudson River and the East River, and divides Manhattan from the Bronx. The vantage point is likely Henry Hudson Bridge. In the lower left Bronx side of the painting, there are railroad tracks cut into the side of a rock formation. In the foreground is a gray body of water that branches off to the left (the main shipping channel) and pools on the right. There is a piece of shore on the right hand Manhattan side with a red steel barrel on it. In the middle ground, there is a green bridge and a red building with two chimneys and distinctive profile --the Manhattan Railway Power Plant (which stood at the foot of West 218th Street in Manhattan). There are a few assorted red buildings in the background under a smoky sky.
