Mondale, Joan

Description

Joan Mondale, wife of Humphrey protégé and future Democratic nominee Walter Mondale, showed her support for Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey at the 1968 Democratic National Convention by carrying this handbag, made from a painted metal lunch pail, and wearing a matching dress and scarf. Humphrey won a hard-fought convention battle to become his party’s presidential nominee but lost the election by less than one percent of the vote to his Republican opponent, former vice president Richard Nixon.
