Description
This fundraising label, designed by Ukrainian actor and musician Marko Halanevych, of the Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha , was printed in Oregon by the Portland Stamp Company during 2022. Non-postal labels such as these are called "Cinderellas" by stamp collectors.
The phrase "Good Evening, We Are From Ukraine," as heard in the 2021 song, "Good Evening (Where Are You From?)" by the electronic music band PROBASS ? HARDI, is a sample of the greeting spoken by Halanevych during a DakhaBrakha performance . Following the 2022 Russian invasion, the phrase quickly became an expression of national resistance among Ukrainian soldiers and civilians alike.
When the national postal operator, Ukrposhta, announced an open stamp design competition on the theme of "Good Evening, We Are From Ukraine," Halanevych submitted this design in blue on yellow paper, the colors of the Ukrainian flag. In the center is a modern Ukrainian soldier holding a Javelin, an American-made anti-tank missile system used during the war with Russia, flanked by Kievan Rus' and Cossack soldiers. The little dog is "Patron," a bomb-sniffing dog. The text reads "Good Evening! We Are From Ukraine!" at top and "For the Benefit of Ukrainian Defenders" at bottom.
The circular cancellation is of a similar design in black with the Ukrainian trident added in the top middle. It is impressed on a square piece of brown paper with softly torn edges; on the back is printed text in Ukrainian alphabet. It may be a proof.
After Halanevych's submission was not selected for the official stamp, the social media account @underground_post turned it into a fundraising label. This recalls the post-World War II years, when Ukrainians living in diaspora operated a “Ukrainian Underground Post” that produced cinderellas to raise money for Ukrainian causes. According to Halanevych, sales benefitted the Kyiv-based non-governmental organization Ukrainian Legion, which used the approximately $2,500 raised to buy communications equipment used by Ukrainian armed forces.at the eastern front.
In addition to the label and pictorial cancel, Underground Post created envelopes and postcards using the same design.
