    Physical Description

    United States Navy (USN) issued flying goggles worn by Cdm. Albert Read, commander of the Curtiss NC-4; aluminum frames with cotton eye cups with fleece padding; glass lenses with discolored xylonite anti-shatter coating; broken elastic strap.

    Summary

    These flying goggles were a British design and were issued to American military aviators as part of their standard flying equipment during World War I. This particular pair of goggles was worn by Cdm. Albert Read, commander of the Curtiss NC-4, during the first crossing of the Atlantic by air.
