    associated person

    Garfield, James A.

    Description

In the 1880 presidential campaign, the Republican party chose James Garfield as its candidate. Garfield was a new senator from Ohio, well-known for his friendly personality and humble origins. Garfield won the 1880 election by the smallest popular vote margin in U.S. history, defeating Winfield Scott Hancock. Tragically, Garfield was shot by a deranged office-seeker within a few months of taking office. After a long and painful struggle, James Garfield died, making him the second president in just 16 years to die by assassination.
