    Earthenware with Ibis Mummy inside. Cone-shaped for holding mummified animal.
    From NMNH Exhibit Hall "Eternal Life in Ancient Egypt" label for this artifact, 2011: Ceramic vessel with mummified ibis; Species: Threskiornis aethiopicus, sacred ibis; 332-30 B.C. Archaeologists excavated hundreds of ibises sealed in egg-shaped ceramic jars like this at Abydos, a pilgrimage site dedicated to Osiris. Pilgrims wishing to send a request to the divine world may have appealed to Thoth, who was known as an excellent messenger.
