    Hurt, Mississippi John

    Description (Brief)

Emory Guitar (ca 1890-1895) played by Mississippi John Hurt at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival. Emory guitars appear to have only been sold in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Max Meyer & Bro. store. By the 1960s, the guitar was owned by Tom Hoskins, who loaned the guitar to Hurt for his 1963 performance at Newport. The guitar eventually ended up in the possession of South Carolina luthier, Darrell Guinn. Guinn identified the guitar by comparing cracks in the guitar's body to photographs from the 1963 festival. Wooden guitar with darker wooden neck. White inlay on neck reads "EMORY." Tuning pegs are white. Line of decorative wood inlay down back.
