Summary
This core stem drill bit is the type used with the Apollo Lunar Surface Drill (ALSD). During lunar operations, the threaded end of the bit was attached to the lower stem tube of the drill core prior to use. The ALSD was used on Apollo missions 15 through 17 to obtain a continuous soil column of up to 3 meters in length.
This object was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1974.
