Estefan, Gloria
Description (Brief)
This black, off-the-shoulder, short dress is reminiscent of a Cuban rumba gown with its tiered ruffles; and was worn for the “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” music video. Grammy-award winning singer, Gloria Estefan was the lead singer of the “Miami Sound Machine” and co-wrote the song, “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” which was released in 1987. With their Cuban musical sounds and English language hits, Miami Sound Machine achieved mainstream musical success in the 1980s with hits like “Conga”, “1-2-3”, and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.” Unlike many other Latino music artists, they did not “crossover” musically from Spanish to English. They began their careers by combining both English- and Spanish-language songs in their hometown repertoire in Miami, Florida during the 1970s. Their breakout hits in English focused national attention on south Florida’s vibrant Cuban-American community, and celebrated its rhythms, sound, and visual culture.
