Dizzy Gillespie

The jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie first gained fame in the early 1940s, and he remained a dynamic presence on the American music scene for the next five decades. Gillespie got his start playing with big bands, such as those led by Cab Calloway and Billy Eckstine. His innovative solos were not universally appreciated, but they heralded future experiments in rhythm and composition.

At Harlem jazz clubs, Gillespie began exploring a new form of musical expression with other young musicians, such as saxophonist Charlie Parker and pianist Thelonious Monk. Out of their freewheeling jam sessions came the infectious energy of bebop, with Gillespie as one of its pioneers and eventually its elder statesman. By the time this poster was made to advertise a performance by Gillespie at New York’s Village Gate nightclub, he was considered “the world’s greatest trumpet [player] in or out of jazz.”
