Robert Mapplethorpe, 4 Nov 1946 - 9 Mar 1989

Sitter

Cindy Sherman, born 19 Jan 1954

Exhibition Label

Born Glen Ridge, New Jersey
By deftly combining performance art with photography, Cindy Sherman continues to create a highly imaginative and provocative body of work. She first drew notice for her Untitled Film Stills (1977–80), a series of black and white photographs that feature the artist in the guise of a B-movie actress. Throughout her subsequent work, Sherman has probed the nature of identity and representation by casting herself in multiple roles and transforming her appearance with the aid of wigs, makeup, prosthetics, costumes, props, and settings. Robert Mapplethorpe photographed Sherman in preparation for his book 50 New York Artists: A Critical Selection of Painters and Sculptors Working in New York (1986). Sherman’s inclusion, alongside established artists such as Willem de Kooning and Louise Bourgeois, signaled her rising stature within a community of artists whose work came to define much of American art in the 1970s and 1980s.
