Born Havre de Grace, Maryland
Known as one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Maryland native Cal Ripken Jr. played for the Baltimore Orioles for the entirety of his major league career. Ripken is best known for his incredible “iron man” streak of 2,632 straight games as a shortstop (May 1982–September 1998), which broke Lou Gehrig’s record. He led the Orioles to a World Championship in 1983 and was a nineteen-time All-Star selection and two-time American League MVP. In 2007, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
Since his retirement, Ripken has been an ambassador to the game, involving himself in charity work and purchasing three minor league baseball teams. He started his own organization, Ripken Baseball Inc., to provide opportunities for young athletes interested in baseball.
