    Object Details

    Artist

    Ira Blount

    Caption

This quilt is pieced using off-white and brown polka-dot cloth in four-patch patterns, half-triangle patterns, and solid squares. It has a solid brown border on both the front and back, and was hand quilted along diagonal lines. The overall pattern comprises alternating blocks of triangles and squares with intersecting white and brown diagonal bands.
Although quilting is traditionally thought of as a woman’s art, artist Ira Blount rejects this narrow, gendered categorization. In his own words, “A lot of people think that because of a certain gender they should be doing this or that. This is a woman’s activity, this is a man’s activity, and I don’t think you should put labels on those things. I’ve gotten a lot of comments from males especially and I just keep sewing and ignore them.”
