Summary
This 40th anniversary box set of commemorative phonograph records was procuced by Ozma Records in 2017. The set includes three vinyl long playing (LP) records, playable on a standard turntable (altough the original space-flown record was meant to be played at a slower speed to accommodate more music and greetings). The anniversary project was supported by a fundraising campaign through the website Kickstarter. Supporters who pledged $98 or more received their own copy of the boxed set at the end of the campaign. The original Voyager “Sounds of Earth” record and record cover, alternatively known as the Voyager Golden Record and the Voyager Interstellar Record, presented a message from humanity to whatever intelligent civilization outside of our solar system discovered the Voyager planetary research probes launched in 1977.
On January 28, 2018 the 40th anniverary box set won a Grammy Award from the Recording Academy for Best Boxed or Special Limited-Edition Package.
Lawrence Azerrad donated this copy of the set to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in 2021.
