    Summary

The National Air and Space Museum published this book in 1983, the same year that the first African American, Guion S. "Guy" Bluford, Jr., flew in space. He took this volume aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on the STS-8 mission. Astronaut Bluford often acknowledged his admiration for the pioneering black aviators who earned their wings and made possible the further achievements of African Americans in aviation and spaceflight. He returned this book to the Museum after his historic flight.
