Summary
This Apollo Command Module boilerplate, #23A, was launched twice at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The purpose of these tests, (one in 1964 and one in 1965) was to demonstrate the capabilities of the launch escape system (LES). The LES is the tower structure mounted to the Apollo capsule. It was the LES which would have safely carried the Apollo crew away from the Saturn rocket in the event of a rocket malfunction.
